Mila Golovine at TAHIT Dallas: Healthcare Language Access, AI, Human Trafficking & Child Safety
The Ana Cruz Show | An Exclusive Interview with Ludmila “Mila” Golovine, Founder and CEO of MasterWord
What if the language you speak could determine whether you receive the medical care you need—or whether you can ask for help in a dangerous situation?
This was one of the powerful questions that emerged during my conversation with Ludmila “Mila” Golovine, founder and CEO of MasterWord, a remarkable entrepreneur and advocate whose work has transformed the way organizations approach language access, particularly in healthcare.
I had the opportunity to interview Mila during the Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and Translators (TAHIT) Learning Symposium in Dallas, Texas, an event that brought together interpreters, translators, healthcare professionals, and industry leaders committed to improving communication and equitable access to healthcare services.
What began as a fascinating discussion about artificial intelligence and the future of healthcare interpreting evolved into a deeply personal conversation about human trafficking, online child exploitation, and a frightening experience involving Mila's own daughter.
It was one of those interviews that reminded me why I love what I do: behind every professional achievement, there is a human story worth telling.
Meet Ludmila “Mila” Golovine: A Leader Transforming Language Access in Healthcare
Ludmila “Mila” Golovine is much more than a successful entrepreneur. She is a leader who has dedicated more than three decades to breaking down language barriers and helping people communicate when it matters most.
In 1993, Mila founded MasterWord, a Houston-based language services company that has grown into an internationally recognized organization providing interpretation, translation, and language access solutions.
Her mission is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves to be understood, regardless of the language they speak. Through MasterWord, Mila has helped organizations across healthcare, government, education, legal services, and other industries communicate with individuals who speak different languages or face communication barriers.
In healthcare, this work can be particularly meaningful.
Imagine arriving at a hospital with a medical emergency and being unable to explain your symptoms. Imagine receiving a complicated diagnosis without fully understanding what the doctor is telling you. Or picture a parent trying to make an important medical decision for their child without access to an interpreter.
These situations happen, and the consequences can be serious.
Language access in healthcare is not simply a matter of convenience. It is an essential part of patient safety, informed consent, and equitable medical care.
Her commitment also extends to Indigenous languages and underserved communities, reinforcing the idea that no one should be excluded from essential services because of a language barrier.
When Language Access Becomes a Lifeline for Human Trafficking Survivors
One of the most meaningful moments in our interview came when our conversation shifted from healthcare technology to human trafficking.
Mila explained how language access can play a crucial role in identifying and supporting individuals who have experienced exploitation, abuse, or trafficking. Imagine someone who has been isolated, threatened, or controlled by another person. They finally encounter a healthcare professional, social worker, law enforcement officer, or advocate who might be able to help.
But there is a problem: they cannot communicate effectively.
They may not speak English. They may fear being misunderstood. They may be unable to explain what has happened or understand the options available to them. In these situations, access to a qualified, trauma-informed interpreter can create an opportunity for someone to share their experience, understand their rights, and seek assistance.
Mila has been involved in efforts to support human trafficking survivors throughout her career.
Her advocacy includes participation in the United Against Human Trafficking Coalition and its survivor services efforts, including work related to guidelines for providing interpretation and translation services to trafficked individuals and survivors.
A Mother's Nightmare: Mila Shares Her Daughter's Experience With Online Grooming on Roblox
Our interview took an unexpected and emotional turn when Mila shared a deeply personal story involving her own daughter. She described how her daughter had been targeted through online grooming on Roblox, the popular gaming platform used by children around the world.
According to Mila's account, the situation escalated to the point where an attempted abduction nearly occurred.
As a mother, hearing her story was heartbreaking.
Do we really know who our children are communicating with online? Are we familiar with the platforms they use? Have we talked to them about grooming, manipulation, and the importance of reporting uncomfortable interactions?
Most importantly, have we created the kind of trust that allows our children to come to us without fear if something goes wrong?
Roblox is one of many platforms where children can interact with others online. The larger issue is how digital communication can be misused by individuals seeking to exploit vulnerable minors.
