[PODCAST] The Cost of Being a Woman: What No One Tells You About the Pay Gap in Texas

By Ana Cruz

This week on Rollos de Mujeres Podcast, Ana had the honor of speaking with one of the most influential voices in the fight for gender equity in Texas: Karen Hughes White, President and CEO of the Texas Women’s Foundation. In an open, honest, and powerful conversation, Karen shared eye-opening data from the foundation’s latest study on the gender pay gap in Texas, along with personal reflections on what it means to lead with empathy, strategy, and a deep belief that women deserve a level playing field to thrive.

According to Texas Women’s Foundation’s latest research, women in Texas earn on average $0.83 for every dollar a man earns. The gap is even wider for Latina and Black women, who earn only $0.47 and $0.59, respectively. These wage disparities don’t just affect monthly income—they represent a loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars over a lifetime, limiting women's ability to save, invest, and support their families.

Karen Hughes White doesn’t just lead with data—she leads with impact. With over 20 years at the helm of nonprofit organizations focused on women and children, her career blends strategic vision, heartfelt commitment, and measurable results. From her early work with Susan G. Komen to leadership roles at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Tri Delta, Karen has consistently built bridges between major brands and life-saving missions. Under her guidance, these partnerships have grown stronger and far more impactful.

In addition to being a powerhouse leader, Karen is a single mother of three young adults and a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion. Now, as the head of the Texas Women’s Foundation, she works tirelessly to ensure that Texas women and girls have real access to education, opportunity, and economic advancement. This episode is not just a conversation—it’s a call to action. Tune in on your favorite podcast platform.
